Housing as Healthcare

Homelessness exacerbates illness and creates a psychological environment in which recovery, in any form, is next to impossible. Safe and affordable housing is one of the most pressing public health and public safety issues facing our nation.

This issue is particularly salient for people with serious mental illness, many of whom rely on government programs such as Supplemental Security Income (SSI) to provide the financial support they need.

In partnership with UNC-School of Social Work, we are excited to see the Tiny Homes Village!

The Tiny Homes Village is a demonstration project that:

  • Provides proof of concept that Tiny Homes can be used to build well-designed, affordable, permanent homes for $50,000.

  • Includes 15 tiny homes about 400 square feet each on a permanent foundation.

  • Provides Veterans with chronic health conditions priority for 5 of the village’s 15 homes.

  • Includes community amenities that foster activities and interactions among residents, such as a clubhouse, walking trails and an outdoor pavilion.

  • Provides residents with access to healthy food, meaningful daily activities, transportation and physical health and behavioral health services.

Tiny Homes, Big Solution

Less than 500 square feet

A tiny home community is a solution to housing as healthcare and health instability.

Our vision is to offer a housing solution that is affordable for individuals on a fixed income, energy efficient, and located in a supportive community environment.

Located at The Farm at Penny Lane, we offer a practical solution to the life of chronic homelessness and isolation experienced by many individuals with mental illness.
