Safe, stable and affordable housing is fundamental to the health and well-being of people impacted by serious mental illness (SMI). Yet, the supply of affordable, accessible and permanent homes in North Carolina is significantly limited, particularly for individuals with SMI who are living on a fixed income. In fact, research has shown that these individuals are among the most at risk for homelessness. Nationally, more than 20percent of people experiencing homelessness have a mental health condition. Others are living in tenuous and precarious housing situations that are not conducive to health and safety….
